Painting and collage

This piece refers to my father's background. I placed his figure clad in scholar's gown from an early photograph, before a row of cave homes much like the one where he was born. He chose to go forth on his own at age twelve instead of remaining in his village. When I saw that village some fifty years later, I understood why he had such reverence for education, how it had set him free.
