It took many years for me to understand that the argument between those who favor representational painting and abstraction is unnecessary. As I became more interested in expressing myself in abstract work, I appreciated the view that the elements of good painting are the same for each. It was very freeing and I hope that it has resulted in both my realistic work and my abstractions being the better for it.
